Let's face it
While we shouldn't be feeding our Frenchies our table scraps and other human food, most of us are guilty of it from time to time!
Be careful though!
There are so many foods that we eat everyday that are extremely dangerous to our Frenchies, which is why it's crucial to know what human foods they can and cannot eat!
Just like anything else in life, your Frenchie should enjoy these foods in moderation to avoid becoming overweight.
Frenchies will eat just about anything… but that doesn't mean they should! Check out this adorable video of @bluenjy eating whatever he pleases!

- Bananas
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
- Watermelon
Just remember, not all fruits and vegetables are safe for your French Bulldog to eat!
As with anything else, be sure to feed them fruits in moderation; some fruits such as pineapple are high in sugar which is bad for your French Bulldog's teeth!
Avoid These Fruits and Vegetables
Some of these fruits and vegetables are possibly deadly if your Frenchie were to eat them.
- Asparagus – possible choking hazard… fine for them to eat otherwise
- Avocado – contains a toxin called persin and the pit in the center is a choking hazard; can cause an upset stomach as well
- Cherries – contains cyanide; the pit is also a choking hazard
- Grapes and raisins – highly toxic; one grape can be deadly; leads to kidney failure
- Lemons and limes – can cause digestive issues; they can eat the inner part of the fruit (but they probably won't be too happy)
- Mushrooms – some store-bought mushrooms can be okay, but some are highly toxic
- Onions – highly toxic; no part of it is okay for a dog to eat
- Plums – the flesh of the fruit is fine, but the pit is a choking hazard
- Tomatoes – the green part of the tomato can cause tomatine poisoning
Custom Dog Food
2. Peanut Butter
Can French Bulldogs eat Peanut Butter?
French Bulldogs can eat peanut butter as long as it's all natural and doesn't contain xylitol (which is extremely toxic to dogs). Be sure to double check the ingredients list.
Really though, what dog doesn't love peanut butter? It's one of my Frenchie's favorite treats!
What makes Peanut Butter good
Peanut butter's also a great source of protein and fiber, but don't forget it's also pretty high in calories and fat – a tablespoon is all they need to get their nutrients!
I've always used peanut butter to bribe my pets to eat their medications. Keep this in mind if you ever have a fussy Frenchie that won't take their medicine.
3. Yogurt
Can French Bulldogs eat Yogurt?
Yogurt is okay in small quantities, but you shouldn't go overboard with it.
Dogs don't have the ability to process dairy like us humans can and too much can bother their digestive systems.
What makes Yogurt good
What makes yogurt great for those pups that can digest it is all the active bacteria found in yogurt! These bacteria strengthen the digestive system with probiotics.
Just like anything else you're sharing with your Frenchie, make sure you double check that it doesn't contain any added sugars or artificial sweeteners such as Xylitol!
4. Cheese
Can French Bulldogs eat Cheese?
Similar to yogurt, cheese is fine for most Frenchies to eat – you'll want to keep their portions small though.
I say it's fine for most Frenchies, because not everyone can handle dairy.
Whether they're lactose intolerant or not, some dogs just can't digest cheese as well as others.
Cheese and other dairy products might give them an upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, or other digestive issues.
Dogs that are lactose intolerant can have issues from even the smallest amount of dairy.
Hard Cheese Snack
What makes Cheese good
Cheese is great for its abundance of protein, calcium, vitamin A, essential fatty acids, and B-complex vitamins, which are essential for your Frenchie's health.
When looking for cheeses to feed your French Bulldog, look for those that are low in fat and sodium. The healthy choices are mozzarella and cottage cheese.
5. Chicken, Turkey & Beef
These three protein sources can be commonly found in most dog foods, raw diets, and other treats.
Just make sure you're feeding them lean proteins.
This means they haven't been cooked in fatty oils, wines, or other ingredients.
Some plain old chicken or turkey from the deli is perfect!
What makes Chicken, Turkey & Beef good
When it comes to protein, there's not much better than this. These are the main ingredients in most dog foods you'll find on the market.

6. Salmon
Can French Bulldogs eat Salmon?
As long as the salmon is fresh (would you eat it?), you're good-to-go.
What makes Salmon good
Salmon is another great source of protein for your pup!
Just as the omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon are beneficial to us humans, they are to your pet as well!
These fatty acids are great for your French Bulldog's coat, skin health, as well as the numerous other benefits associated with this amazing nutrient.
Some other benefits of the Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon are
- Improve eye health
- Promote brain health
- Promote heart health
- Reduce inflammation

7. Tuna
Can French Bulldogs eat Tuna?
Yes, but only in small amounts.
Tuna that you share with your dog should always be prepared in water without any extra spices.
Just plain tuna will do; they won't even know the difference.
If you're feeding your French Bulldog canned tuna, just know it contains small amounts of mercury and sodium, and you'll need keep those portions on the smaller side & not feed them tuna often.
What makes Tuna good
Tuna is another great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which of course promote heart and eye health!
8. Pumpkin
What makes Pumpkin good
Pumpkin is fiber-rich which makes it great for your French Bulldog's digestive system! It's also full of other nutrients that are essential to a healthy pup such as vitamin A, E, C, potassium, and iron.
My veterinarian recommends me to feed my Frenchie a little bit of pumpkin whenever she has diarrhea, constipation, or an upset stomach.
Both fresh and canned pumpkin are good, just make sure there's no xylitol in it. If you choose canned pumpkin, try to stay away from those high in salt, sugar, and other additives/spices as these can irritate their stomachs.
For Frenchies, you'll want to add 1-4 tablespoons of pumpkin per meal for stomach issues.
Frenchie Pumpkin Treats
9. Rice
Can French Bulldogs eat Rice?
Rice — the world's cheapest 'n tastiest food that can also save our phones after dropping them in the toilet (I swear that didn't happen to me). Name another food that can do that!
Eat it, fix your phone with it, make a heat pack, ripen fruit, and more — just a few of the many odd uses for rice.
What makes Rice good
But did you also know that rice is great at relieving your Frenchie's upset stomach? It's easy to digest and low in fiber which makes it easy on the stomach.
Dogs can eat cooked, plain white rice or pasta with no problems. Just make sure you don't add any seasonings or spices and you'll be good to go!
10. Popcorn
Can French Bulldogs eat Popcorn?
A little bit of unsalted, unbuttered, air-popped popcorn is perfectly fine for your Frenchie to consume! So don't be selfish next time you're watching a flick with your Frenchie!
In fact, it contains riboflavin and thiamine which promotes eye health and digestion.
Just make sure that the kernels are completely popped as they pose a choking hazard for your Frenchie!
11. Wheat and grains
Can French Bulldogs eat Wheat & Grains?
There has been controversy in recent years over dogs and grain-free or gluten-free diets.
The concern over wheat and other grains arise from a tragic event in 2007 where wheat from China was contaminated with industrial chemicals that affected thousands of pets and even killed some!
What makes Wheat & Grains good (or not so good)
Are wheat and grains really that great for our dogs?
Well, that depends on who you ask.
On one hand, dogs are actually able to digest carbohydrates such as grains with ease due to their genetics which allow them to digest starch much better than their wolf counterparts.
But there are also many owners who believe that their pet should be eating grain-free or gluten-free diet. This isn't really necessary unless your dog suffers from Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to feed my Frenchie raw meat?
The short answer is yes, but there are some caveats.
You certainly wouldn't want to feed raw meat to a dog that is immunocompromised.
Raw Food Toppers
The dangers
First things first, raw meat still contains food-borne pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, and other parasites. When you use clean, fresh meat, the risk of these pathogens is lower.
Spoiled raw meat will certainly make your Frenchie sick (or worse), which is why you'll need to make sure their food is as fresh as possible. If you wouldn't cook it up and eat it, don't just toss it on the kitchen floor for them to clean up.
The Wolf Diet
Long before dogs were domesticated, you certainly wouldn't find the world "dog food" in a dictionary.
Back in these days, dogs thrived off a diet known as the wolf diet, which consists of raw muscle meat and organs, eggs, fruit, and vegetables. As you could guess, it's pretty much what a wolf eats.
Knowing that, it probably wouldn't surprise you to hear that some Frenchies even eat a 100% raw diet!
Raw diets are becoming more and more popular these days for a whole bunch of reasons, although they're highly controversial.
